Results of spring barley variety trials: effect of environmental conditions on grading and protein content

In 1986-1988 small-plot comparative variety trials were carried out on 12 spring malting barley varieties /Ceveco 8501, Perun, SK 2209, Orbit, Ronda, Maresi, GK Isis, Mars, Serwa, Rubin, Opal, Zenit/ under various environmental conditions. Analyses were made on yield /kg/ha/, straw height /cm/, 1000 grain weight /g/, hl weight /kg/, ear number /m2/, grain weight /ear/, grain number /ear/, standability, day of maturity and grain protein content. The measurements were made between 1985 and 1988, comparing Hungarian and Slovakian data. According to quality analysis carried out at the Brewing research Institute and at the Borsod, Kobanya, Nagykanizsa breweries, in the North-Hungarian growing region the barley grains had a higher protein o/o than elsewhere in the country but produced lower yields. The greatest grain yield was given by the variety Orbit /50-70 kg/ha in Hungary, 6700 kg/ha in Slovakia/. Large-scale trials set up in 1988 indicate that the variety Fatran no longer meets the requirements.
