Influence of housing and environmental factors on the daily rhythm of porkers' behaviour

270 groups consisting of 5-20 Hungarian Yorkshire x Dutch Landrace piglets each were investigated. The number of groups moved between 15-20. The resting place per animal was an average 0.8 m2, in boxes with slatted floors. The daily rhytm of the porkers did not change with age increase. The rhythm of the eating period was more expressed among smaller groups. The eating time and its daily distribution can be influenced, and regulated by feeding methods, determined by the prevailing performance data, the qualitative demands of slaughter values and the labour organizing factors. At self-feeding, the engagement of the feeding places and the lenght of the full resting periods indicate the fact that the bigger eating place /25-30 o/o/ is more advantageous to the porkers because the natural rhythm can better assert itself in the daily course of their actions. The seasonal effects express themselves in the degree of the rhythm.
