Mechanical cane planting in Barbados
1991
Hudson, C. (Carib Agro-Industries, Bridgetown (Barbados))
Reasons for developing cane planter are explained. The machine which is now standard is a 2-row unit pushed (not pulled) by the tractor. This ensures good pressing of the soil around the planted setts. Whole stalk cane is fed by operators through hydraulically-powered saws, which cut the cane into 50 cm billets. Two of the machines have inter-changeable racks. The paper concludes with a description of transplanting techniques being developed in Barbados.
