Fly Ash and Filter Press mud are both by-products of the cane sugar industry. Trinidad processes in the region of 1.4m tonnes of cane per year. Of this amount 30 % is bagasse and 4 to 6 % filter cake. The bagasse burnt amounts to 350,000 tonnes per annum. This produces 2,000 tonnes per year of particulate matter. The filter press mud is used as a fertiliser which is somewhat deficient in nitrogen. The fly ash constitutes a waste product of little value. This investigation was carried out with a view of producing a slow release fertiliser which can in the future be used to improve the physical and chemical properties of infertile soil. Humic and Fulvic acids content of the ammoniated mass were determined. Results show that the C/N ratio gas decreased for the varying mixtures.
