Making modern rice production technology work: the case of participatory IPM [integrated pest management] extension and women project in the Philippines

This project hopes to increase IPM [integrated pest management] awareness and reduce pesticide dependence and ultimately facilitate adoption of the technology at farm level in target villages. In addition, it also aims to highlight the role of rural women (specifically the farmers wives) in the farming community and assist them in the performance of such roles through appropiate technology, if any, or develop one with their active participation. The study covers five adjoining villages (barangays) in Calamba, Laguna [Philippines] namely: Banadero, Banlic, Lecheria, Looc and San Jose. A total of 51 rice and vegetable farmer-cooperators are directly being served by the project. The mean educational attainment is 6.5 years in school, the mean household size is 8 and the mean age of the cooperators is 51 years. The mean number of years in farming is 29.8 and 67% of the cooperators are leasees. Tenants comprise 11% and enjoy a 50-50 sharing arrangement. In this project, systematic and deliberate effort was made to ensure the active participation of various sectors of the village- the farming family, the village teachers, the technicians and officials of the local office of the Department of Agriculture.
