Field evaluation of the efficacy of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and fluazifop-butyl for most emergence control of grass weeds infesting direct-seeded lowland, irrigated rice

A study was conducted in farmer's field during the dry season of 1989 (Jan-Apr) to evaluate the efficacy of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and fluazifop-butyl for post emergence grass control in wet-sown, direct-seeded lowland rice. Plot size was 4m x 5m. Treatments were arranged following the randomized complete block design with four replications to a treatment. Fertilizer rate was 90-30-30 with 45 kg N and all of P2O5 and K2O applied at final harrowing. The remaining 45 kg N was top dressed at 45 days after seeding (DAS). Herbicide treatments were made at 25 DAS or when grass weed seedlings were at 3-5 leaf stages. Hand weeding treatment was made at 14, 25, and 35 DAS. Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl at 30, 35, and 40 grams ai/ha controlled grass weeds dominated by Echinochloa colona (L.) Link. and E. crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv. but not broad leaves and sedges. Grain yield was highest in the handweeded check (4.38 t/ha) and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl treated plots produced 3.51 to 3.74 t/ha. The lowest yields were obtained from fluazifop-butyl treated plots and the untreated check.
