Selection of cotton varieties in different environments

Seed cotton yields of 25 entries initially evaluated in San Juan, Ilocos Sur and the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Kabacan, North Cotabato [Philippines] during CY 1987-88 were analyzed. Results revealed a genetic correlation between yields obtained from the two locations indicating the presence of a genotype-environment interaction. The USM area, considered to have a poorer environment than that of San Juan, favored a fuller expression of promising strains. The expected response to selection at USM as well as its carry-over improvements to other areas were much higher than in San Juan. Thus, preliminary evaluation is recommended in a poor environment represented by the USM area to minimize the number of PVT [Preliminary Verification Trial] locations except when screened varieties are intended for specific environments which justify selection in each test site. However, if several PVT areas can be maintained and the varieties to be developed are geared for general adaptation, the use of an index that combine data from different locations is recommended.
