Components of pathogenic variability and host resistance to Erwinia chrysanthemi Burk., McF. and Dim. in corn

Fourteen isolates of Erwinia chrysanthemi Burk., Mef. and Dim., the causal pathogen of bacterial stalk rot of corn collected from various localities in Central and Southern Mindanao [Philippines] were tested for variability in terms of percent infection and percent toppling of 42.0 were obtained with isolate D1, six days with isolate E2 but infection by many isolates were observed only 40 days after inoculation. Differences in infection rates and rate of lodging were likewise noted. Considerable degree of resistance was found in a number of cultivars. Both hybrids and open-pollinated varieties appeared to possess genes for resistance that can be accumulated through appropriate selection techniques.
