Rhizosphere and rhizoplane microflora of selected Philippine crop plants

The total microbial counts in the rhizosphere, excluding the protozoans and algae, showed the predominance of bacteria, followed by the actinomycetes and fungi. In the rhizoplane, the bacteria appeared also to be the dominant group. The microflora of both rhizophere soil and root surface consists of: a) bacteria, mostly of the Gram-negative non-spore forming rods; b) actinomycetes, with the genus Streptomycetes being the most abundant; and c) fungi belonging to the zygomycetes, ascomycetes and deuteromycetes. Although a greater number of fungi were isolated from the rhizosphere, qualitatively there appear to be a slight difference between the rhizosphere soil and root surface mycoflora. In both ecosystems the most frequently occurring were the deuteromycetes with Aspergillus as the dominant genus. A significant observation was the frequency of occurrence of Fusarium in the rhizoplane as compared to the rhizosphere.
