Eight insecticides of different chemical structures were evaluated for selectivity to the earwigs. The toxicity of the different insecticides to the corn borer decreased as follows: cypermethrin monocrotophos = deltamethrin chlorpyrifos ethyl + BPMC = carbofuran carbaryl = methomly = endosulfan, while the adverse effects of the insecticides to the predatory earwig decreased as follows: monocrotophos deltamethrin cypermethrin chlorpyrifos ethyl + BPMC carbofuran methomyl = carbaryl endosulfan. Determination of the selectivity ratio suggested that carbofuran and cypermethrin are the most selective insecticides to the earwig. Based on the company's recommended rates, chlorpyrifos ethyl + BPMC, carbofuran and endosulfan were highly toxic to the larvae of corn borer while endosulfan was highly toxic to the earwig followed by chlorpyrifos ethyl + BPMC.
