Distribution and control of the introduced golden snail (Pomacea sp.) in the Philippines

The golden snail Pomacea sp. was introduced in the Philippines in 1982 to increase the protein source of the Filipino people. However, after intensive mass production in urban and rural communities, it became a pest of rice in 1986 and is becoming a threat to corn, ornamentals, ramie, citrus plantation, and other agricultural crops. A recent survey of ricefield showed that the golden snail is widespread in different parts of the country and is causing a significant damage to rice plant. As of February 1988, 13,945.78 hectares (3.6%) of ricefields were already infested nationwide. At present, the main method of controlling the golden snail is by the use of molluscicides. The search for other pesticides which is less hazardous to man and less toxic to fish and other non-target organism is going on. However, the need to look for strategies utilizing a combination of biological, cultural and mechanical with or without the usage of oil-based chemicals remains a priority.
