Effects of bamboo mat cover on grain quality of Burmese paddy heaps at three moisture levels

In the absence of adequate permanent storage facilities in Burma, bumper crop paddy delivered in the production collection centres areas is heaped in large piles of about 10,000 baskets containing about 210 tonnes of paddy. These are left in the open for a period of up to four months or until the onset of the monsoon season. Serious damage could occur under these circumstances. With the lack of artificial drying facilities, the moisture content (m.c.) of farmers' paddy varies and unseasonal rainfall may also cause serious wetting in uncovered grain heaps. To assess the effect of exposed storage on the quality of paddy and the milled rice and evaluate the advantages of shading using bamboo covers, a storage study of paddy of different moisture levels was undertaken at Hlegu.
