Host preference of coffee bean weevil, Araecerus fasciculatus de Geer (Anthribidae: Coleoptera) and its susceptibility to organophosphates and synthetic pyrethroids

The life history of Araecerus fasciculatus de Geer (Coleoptera: Anthribidae) on different stored food products was studied. Its fecundity, sex ratio, population densities, and seasonal abundance were investigated. The total development period of the coffee bean weevil which average 85.062 +- 2.38 days consisted of the following stages: incubation period, 4.656 +- 0.082 days; larval period, 6.84 +- 0.027 days; and adult longevity, 82.82 days for male and 87.3 days for female. Starved adults lived for 5 to 15 days. Eggs were laid singly at the rate of two eggs per day. Females lay an average of 67.1 eggs/lifetime. The number of eggs increased as the number of males/mating increased. The mean pre-oviposition period is 11.92 +- 0.545 days while the oviposition period is 30.5 +- 1.6346 days. The incubation period was four days in coffee, cassava or cacao but was shorter in peanuts. Similarly, the larval period was shortest in peanutcoffee, cacao or cassava. Adults lived for an average of 92.16 days in cacaocassavacoffeepeanut. Females preferred to lay eggs in peanutcassavacacaopeanut. A hundred percent survival among larvae was observed in peanutcoffeecassavacacao. The pre-oviposition period was shortest in cacaocassavacassavacoffee=cacao while egg hatchability was highest in cacao=coffeepeanutcassava. The total number of insects was highest in corncassava=peanutcoffee=cacao. Corn was also the most efficient food for the weevils. However, the starved adults fed on all stored food products. Sack impregnation with delthamethrin at 0.75% dosage at 32.1 deg C and 61% relative humidity gave 100% mortality. This decreased to 70 and 32% after 30 and 45 days, respectively. Cypermethrin, fenvalerate at 0.75% and metacrifos, pirimiphos methyl and malathion at 2% were ineffective in killing A. fasciculatus.
