The content of phenol compounds in leaves of four sugar-beet cultivars characterized by different susceptibility to the attack of anthomyiid fly larvae, was compared. Changes in the content of phenols brought about by the feeding of larvae were also determined. Before Pegomyia hyoscyami infection resistant cultivars contained more total phenols and polyphenols than the susceptible ones. The feeding brought about a decrease in the content of total phenols and polyphenols and an increase in monophenols
