Oram, P. (International Food Policy Research Inst., Washington (USA)) | Belaid, A. (Institut Technologique des Grandes Cultures, El-Harrach (Algeria))
This study was undertaken as a joint project of ICARDA and IFPRI based on a need endorsed by the Panel conducting ICARDA's Second External Program Review of 1988 to review the current potential role of food legumes in the agriculture of West Asia and North Africa, with particular reference to the significance of lentils, as a means of determining the Center's future strategy for research on these crops, and their priority in its overall programme of work. Results of ICARDA's analysis of existing evidence are reported on the value of legumes in production systems in the region with respect to both their contribution to soil fertility under stressful conditions, the possibilities for expansion in their use as livestock feed, and in-depth assessment on the potential pay-off of further investment in the improvement of lentil (taking into account the contribution to human nutrition, foreign trade, and the sustainability of production systems in the region) in order to determine the appropriate allocation of its resources
