Path coefficient studies for yield and yield components in faba bean (Vicia faba L.)

Field trials were undertaken in Kanpur in India to study the nature of the association and furnish additional information as path coefficient analysis to determine the components of yield using 40 indigenous and exotic faba bean strains from Afghanistan, Holland, Germany, England, Syria, Egypt, Canada, Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among all the treatments for all the characters studied, indicating the existence of sufficient genetic variability among the examined traits. There was a positive and significant association between grain yield and number of pods/plant and harvest index. Number of pods/plant was positively correlated with seed/pod and harvest index. Path coefficient analysis, number of pods/plant, harvest index, number of seeds/pod, and seed weight were the principal yield attributes for which selection can be effective
