The role of mycorrhizal fungi in crop nutrition in the warmer regions

Agricultural scientists are recognizing more and more the beneficial effect of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi on crop development. The main advantage of mycorrhizal fungi is their ability to promote phosphorus uptake by crops in particular under marginal soil conditions with environmental extremes and low nutrient status. Many factors can decisively influence the development of VAM fungi. In this report, the crucial role of the mycorrhizal symbiosis in crop nutrition under various environmental conditions, agronomic practices, and plant breeding aspects is presented and discussed. Considering the potential that VAM fungi offers, the scale of mycorrhizae research in tropical countries should be substantially expanded in order to assure an effective application of this symbiosis in cropping systems of the warmer regions
