Application of dimefuron and diuron for weed control in pineapple

Dimefuron (4-(2-chloro-4-(3,3-dimethyl ureido phenyl-2-t-butyl-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one) alone at 2.0 to 3.0 kg ai/ha or the combinations of dimefuron at 2.0 and diuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl-1-1-dimethylurea) 2.0 and 4.0 kg ai/ha were suitable weed control as preemergence and postemergence application in sandy soil with high moisture content. For clay soil the higher rates of those herbicides were required. In soil with low moisture content the combination of equal rates of dimefuron and diuron at 2.0 to 3.0 kg ai/ha plus non-ionic surfactant (polyalkylene oxide modified dimethyl polysiloxanes) 0.20 % (v/v) were found suitable when applied postemergence. The combination gave efficacy similar to that of the standard combinations of bromacil (5-bromo-3-butyl-6methyluracil) and diuron at 2.0 + 2.0 to 2.0 + 4.0 kg ai/ha used by the plantation companies and general farmers. Surfactant increased the efficacy of dimefuron and diuron whether when used alone or in combination. In the phytotoxicity study dimefuron and diuron plus non-ionic surfactant combination produced less chlorotic phytotoxicity than bromacil alone or in combination with diuron. The phytotoxicity usually lasted in about 8 weeks after application. Actually, dimefuron alone produced much less phytotoxicity. Evaluation of growth and quality of pineapple was not significant different among all treatment.
