Effect of water-soaked leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) leaf meal in broiler rations

Experiment 1 : Effect of water-soaked leucaena leaf meal (WSLLM) on performance of broilers was studied using experimental diets containing 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % WSLLM, respectively for a period of 4 weeks. Increasing levels of WSLLM in the diets linearly decreased performance and carcass characteristics of the broilers, and the differences were statistically highly significant (P0.01). Increasing levels of WSLLM resulted in highly significant (P0.01) increase in shank color scores and cost per kilogram weight gain of the broilers. The birds on the diet containing 15 percent WSLLM had the highest shank colour score. Experiment 2 : Effect of inclusion of water soaked leucaena leaf meal (WSLLM) at 4 and 15 % in corn, sorghum and cassava based broiler diets were studied using diets as follows. Diet 1 : Corn + 4 % WSLLM; Diet 2 : Sorghum + 4 % WSLLM; Diet 3 : Sorghum + 15 % WSLLM; Diet 4 : Cassava + 4 % WSLLM and Diet 5 : Cassava + 15 % WSLLM. There were no statistically differences in performances of broilers fed diet 1, 2 and 4. Inclusion of 15 % WSLLM in either sorghum or cassava based diets slightly reduced performance of the broilers, However, the differences were highly significant (P0.01). There were no significant differences in carcass quality and cost per kilogram weight gain of the broilers fed these experimental diets. High inclusion of WSLLM in sorghum and cassava based diets significantly (P0.01) improved shank pigmentation of the broilers.
