Effect of rhizobial inoculation at one side of soybean split-root system on nodulation and nitrogen fixing activity of the other side

This experiment was conducted in green house with the factor (a) consisted of 3 inoculation of strain T-2, mixed strain T-2/ 110 and 0 (none) on the left side of split-root system at planting date, the factor (b) consisted of 4 inoculation of strain T-2, strain 110, mixed strain T-2/ 110 and 0 (none) on the right side of split root system after planting. When rhizobial inoculation on the right was delayed, the nodulation on this side was decreased whereas the left was increased. The more delaying inoculation, the more nodule mass and shoot dry weight per plant were increased but nitrogen fixing activity was decreased. Nodule number and root dry weight per plant were not related too. Inoculation were delayed more than 8 days on the right side while the left was inoculated. A few nodules were found on the right compared to normal nodulation on the right. Without inoculation on the left, nodulation and nitrogen fixing activity were so high as normal nodulation. There were no differences between strains T-2 and 110 but strain T-2 seems to have more ability on nodulation, nitrogen fixing activity, root and shoot dry weight than the strain 110. The competitive ability of rhizobial strain 110 and T-2 was also observed. Strain 110 had more competitive ability than the T-2. Approximately 70 % of nodules were formed by strain 110 when only 30 % were formed by strain T-2.
