Appropriate plant density for late planting and effect of stem cutting on grain yield of annual castor bean

Plant densities did not influence flowering date, raceme length, numbers of capsule per raceme and seed size. An increase in plant populations caused increase in plant height, numbers of primary raceme per land area and height of primary raceme but a decrease in numbers of raceme and capsule per plant as well as capsule and seed weights. The result tended to suggest a 75cm x 50cm spacing with one plant per hill as the recommended planting method for the late planting of the detopped castor plant. May planting flowered earlier and outyielded that of August planting. The second season castor plants of the May planting gave a satisfactory grain yield whether stems were cut or not after the harvest of the first season. Due to the relatively low plant survival percentage, grain yield in the second year was reduced remarkedly and it is, thus, an unadvisable planting technique.
