Influence of irrigation intervals and rates of fertilizer application on tropical and temperate maize cultivars under tropical conditions

Ages at tasseling and silking of the temperate cultivars were found longer at higher range of ambient temperature (19.0-31.5 deg. C.) as compared to the tropical cultivars. On the contrary, plant height, leaf number, ear size, number of seeds per ear, 1,000-seed weight and yield of the tropical cultivars were higher than the temperate cultivars. A tendency existed that the highest and the lowest grain yield belonged to Tuxpeno and Markant. Increasing frequency of irrigation was found to delay ages to tasseling and silking and shortened the time interval between them regardless of the maize cultivars. Plant height, leaf number, ear size, number of seeds per ear, 1,000-seed weight, shelling percentage and yield of maize were found to increase as the frequency of irrigation increased. Yield was found to increase with increasing rate of fertilizer.
