Study on the ability of F1 hybrids and parental lines of tomatoes in nitrogen fertilizer utilization

Fruit number was more influential on tomato yield than weight per fruit. Hybrid V3 x V1 exhibited mid-parent heterosis in plant height, flowers per inflorescence, fruits per cluster, fruit number per plant, fruit yield per plant, tSS, citric acid, firmness of red fruit, nitrogen and potassium contents in leaves as well as earliness. Hybrid V3 x V2 performed mid-parent heterosis in flowers per inflorescence, fruit yield per plant, firmness of red fruit, nitrogen and potassium contents in leaves and earliness. Hybrid V4 x V1 gave mid-parent heterosis in plant height, secondary branch number per plant, fruit yield per plant, citric acid content and earliness. Weight per fruit of the three hybrids were inferior to their mid-parent values. Nitrogen fertilizer affected fruit yield per plant, fruit number per plant, fruit length and potassium content in leaves. Fruit yield per plant at the rate of 20 kg N/rai was not different from 40 and 80 kg N/rai. Fruit number per plant and fruit length responded to nitrogen fertilizer at the rate of 10 kg/rai. The interaction between nitrogen fertilizer and varieties of tomatoes were found in primary branch number per plant, primary and secondary branch number per plant, including the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in fruits. Remarks : V1, V2, V3 and V4 are varieties of tomatoes V1 = K.U. Porter, V2 = Giant Seeda, V3 = VF 134-1-2, V4 =Floradel.
