Breeding behavior of some grain quality characteristics in crosses with the deepwater rice RD 19

Chalkiness was a recessive trait. F1 exhibited maternal effect in cross KDML 105/RD 19. Selection in F2 seeds harvested from F1 plants was not sufficiently effective. Heritability estimates were rather low, leaving a large role for the environment in the expression of trait. Segregation for amylose content was attributed to two genes in cross RD 19/NSG19 and to a single gene in cross KDML105/RD19. The heritability estimates were high and ranged from 79 to 92 %. Gelatinization temperature was measured using the alkal: digestion index. High alkali digestion values were incompletely dominant in the cross KDML 105/RD 19 and the F2 distribution of both crosses suggested that polygenes controlled this trait. Heritability estimates in the cross RD19/NSG19 was moderately high and high in KDML 105/RD19. In both crosses, the correlations significantly and positively associated low chalkiness with low amylose content. There was association between low chalkiness and high alkali digestion index in cross KDML 105/RD19, while it was not significant in cross RD19/NSG19. In this study, F3 lines with chalky grains had high amylose content and low alkali digestion index.
