Documenting structure and productivity in indigenous Pacific Island agroforestry systems
1992
Raynor, B.
Increasing research interest is being focused on indigenous or traditional agroforestry because of its many ecological and socio-economic benefits in terms of current agricultural productivity and future development. Unfortunately, research has been hampered by a lack of methodologies and inherent difficulties in characterising traditional subsistence agricultural systems. It is suggested that initial research should concentrate on quantitatively documenting the structure (vertical, horizontal, and temporal) and input/output relations (quantification of labour and other inputs and their allocation, productivity, and yields). Several sampling and measurement methods are discussed and suggestions are made for the types of data to be collected, based on previous work by the author and other researchers, mainly in the Pacific.
