Trials were conducted in 1985, 1986 and 1987 on the effect of distance between pollenizers - intercompatible fruit set and retention. The distance ranged from 5 to 80 metres. The degree of fruit setting and retention in relation to the pollenizer distance differed by the cultivars. The distance did not significantly affect the number of fruits set and retained in Jonathan and Golden Delicious, whereas it significantly affected Starking. Pollenizer distance affected the number of seeds in apple fruits. The differences were significant with Jonathan and very significant with Starking and Golden Delicious. There were found very significant variations in the number of fruits set and retained in all the three apple cultivars between the years of study.
