Yields and chemical composition of forage kale grown as a main crop and as a double crop

The paper presents two-year results of the productivity and chemical composition of a forage kale variety Green Angliter grown as a main crop and as a double crop. On a poor alluvial soil which received 20 t/ha of liquid manure and N60P60K60 kg/ha, after the vegetation period lasting from 124 to 135 days, the yields of green forage, dry matter and crude proteins were 80.24, 11.63 and 1.39 t/ha, respectively, when the variety was grown as the main crop, and 63.97, 10.02 and 1.51 t/ha, respectively when the variety was double cropped. The double cropped forage kale had a higher portion of the foliage than main crop (45.31% and 28.84%, respectively) which resulted in a higher content of crude proteins in the former (15.30% and 12.00%, respectively). The chemical composition was favourable in both crops, without essential differences between them. Although growing of the forage kale as the main crop brought about significantly higher yields of green forage, the double cropping was definitely more profitable and more rational.
