Effect of Ethrel on the number and size of stomata in sugar beets differing in the level of nitrogen provision

The effect of foliar application of Ethrel on the number and size of stomata in sugar beet leaves was examined in field and semicontrolled conditions. The studied sugar beet plants differed in the level of nitrogen provision. The following conclusions were drawn. The number of stomata was larger on the reverse side than on the upper surface of the leaves. There were no large differences in the length and width of stomata. The foliar application of Ethrel increased the number of stomata, but reduced their size on both the upper surface and the reverse side of the leaves. The increases in nitrogen supply tended to increase the number of stomata per leaf area unit. An interaction was established between the effects of Ethrel and nitrogen on the number of stomata. In both field and semicontrolled conditions, the effect of nitrogen was highest on the control plants and lowest on the plants treated with the highest concentration of nitrogen. A general statement can be made Ethrel caused xeromorphic changes of sugar beet leaves.
