Immunization of dogs agains rabies with a modified live vaccine (HEP Flury strain); Survey of immunogenicity and duration of immunity

The experiment was done on 35 German shorthaired pointer dogs. Thirty dogs were vaccinated against rabies using modified live vaccine of the Hep Flury strain. Immunity was checked 3,6 and 12 months after vaccination by serum - neutralization tests. Ten vaccinated dogs and five nonvaccinated controls were infected intracerebrally with the CVS strain of rabies virus. Nine out of ten vaccinated dogs survived the challenge, while only one out of five nonvaccinated controls survived. It was found that the percentage of survival was correlated with the level of serum antibodies.
