Effect of low doses of the mycotoxin zearalenone on reproductive characteristics of pigs

The effect of low doses of zearalenone (under 1.1 mg/kg fodder) on reproductive characteristics of gilts, pregnant sows, and sows still nursing their piglets was examined. Investigations were performed in two pig farms which obtained fodder from the same works. Mycological and mycotoxicological examinations were carried out and the clinical condition of 2520 breeding sows was monitored. In three of the four groups of examined fodder a species of fungi from the Fusarium genus was found. The mycotoxin zearalenone was found in examined fodder in both farms in amounts of 0.2-1.1 mg/kg. In maize kernels fodder in both farms in amounts of 0.2-1.1 mg/kg fodder. In maize kernels 0.2-0.75 mg zearalenone per 1 kg kernels was found. The health of the sows was satisfactory. In 6 gilts, or 0.24% of the total number, we observed an estrogen syndrome in the form of vulvovaginitis, which disappeared after a little while. There were no changes in the milk glands. There were no abortions or premature parturitions. The index of births was 2.24 in farm 1 and 2.18 in farm 2. The number of live piglets per litter was 10.19 in farm 1 and 10.0 in farm 2.
