Taking into account the conclusion reached by other authors on the optimal length of service period, the present authors directed their investigations towards determination of average service period in first calvers from two communal farms in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Yugoslavia). In 324 first calvers examined, service period averaged 91.04 days. Calculated per 120 days being considered as economically justifiable service period, it was established that 260 first calvers (80.25%) required long servicing after calving. The length of service period was proved to differ in accordance with the month of first calving. The same pattern was observed in the time of conception which tended to occur in different intervals after 1, 2, 3 or more inseminations. Insemination index was also followed and averaged 1.78.
