The authors examined 385 samples of joint contents of parenchymatous organs, smears from nostrils, cloaca and feathers of poultry with clinical symptoms of arthritis of tarsal joints, as well as smears taken from the surface of the facility and equipment. We tried to determine the ethiology of staphylococcal infections in three poultry farms in Bosnia-Herzegovina (Yugoslavia). The following was isolated from the taken material: 113 isolates of Staphylococcus gallinarum, 3 of Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and 1 of Staphylococcus haemolyticus. Staphylococcus gallinarum was isolated from parenchymatous organs [42 strains from joint contents (35), from smears of feathers (28), and from the surface of the facilities and equipment (8)]. Staphylococcus saprophyticus was isolated from parenchymatous organs (2) and from contents of joints (1). Staph. haemolyticus was isolated from parenchymatous organs (1). Since we found the highest number of strains of Staphylococcus gallinarum, which is in agreement with corresponding pathoanatomical changes, we believe that this strain plays an important ethiological role in staphylococcal infections of the examined poultry.
