This paper briefly outlines the tillage technologies currently employed by smallholder farmers for cereal production in Southern Africa. It then examines some additional tillage technologies that research has thought appropriate to the needs of smallholders but that have, at best, been adopted by just a few farmers, and this indicates some of the current agronomic problems that smallholder farmers face with these technologies. It then offers suggestions on tillage research themes and approaches that need to be addressed in the future if new tillage and related technologies are to be more appropriate to farmer needs, bearing in mind the resource base and economic conditions under which the farmers operate
