Evaluation of chemical seed treatment for the control of seed-borne Fusarium culmorum and Bipolaris sorokiniana on wheat [in Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy]

The effectiveness of some fungicides against Fusarium culmorum and Bipolaris sorokiniana was tested on winter wheat by seed treatment both in field and in controlled conditions. Six fungicides (guazatine, mancozeb, carbenzim+maneb, carboxin+thiram, prochloraz+mancozeb and thiophanate-methyl+maneb) were applied on naturally infected cv. Creso seeds in two field trials carried out over two years. Prochloraz+mancozeb, guazatine and carbendazim+maneb provided the best emergence and the highest winter survival of seedlings. These fungicides also reduced the percentage of seedlings infected by F. culmorum in December, and the first two products maintained their efficacy even after three months from seeding (at the end of February). Furthermore, culms from seeds treated with prochloraz+mancozeb and guazatine showed the lowest infection rate in June. All fungicides reduced B. sorokiniana -induced infection both in December and at the end of February, prochloraz+mancozeb being the most active also in June 1991. Greenhouse experiments showed that all fungicides can reduce the infection which is caused by F. culmorum and B. sorokiniana artificially and separately inoculated on seed. The effectiveness of prochloraz+mancozeb, guazatine and carbendazim+maneb was confirmed, particularly that of prochloraz+mancozeb against B. sorokiniana.
