Dissemination of weeds by irrigation

The trial carried out in springtime and in summertime of 1990, was aimed to the determination of the weed seeds dispersion by irrigation water through ditches with banks weedfree and naturally infested. The weed populations on infested ditches were mainly represented, on banks, by associations of species belonging to hay-fields, of ruderal and nitrophilous species, of briers and of Glechoma hederacea. The collection of the weed seeds was achieved by a net placed into the irrigation drain. The section of the ditches was 0.95 m2. The observations were effected for one hour a day during a week in May and in August. The collected seeds were mainly belonging to the following species: Arrhenatherum elatius, Antoxantum odoratum, Rumex spp., Lolium multiflorum, Poa spp., Bromus sterilis, Trifolium repens, Trifolium pratense. The results pointed out that, in 24 hours, the weed seeds number changed according to the period of observation and to the weed management of ditches. The weed seeds collected in water, per day, were, in average, 1920 in springtime and 288 in summertime in infested bank ditches, 504 in springtime and 48 in summertime in weedfree bank ditches.
