Integrated control of grey mould of tomato grown under protection

Experimental trials were carried out on tomato (cv Candela) grown under plastic tunnel in northern Italy in order to control grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) by integrating cultural, chemical and biological measures. In a tunnel, balanced fertilization, ventilation and heating alone permitted, under very severe disease pressure, a satisfactory control, resulting in strong disease reduction. Use of fungicides (a mixture of procymidone + thiram) permitted to further reduce disease incidence. However, chemical treatments did not significantly affect tomato yield. On the contrary, in a tunnel with high nitrogen fertilization, reduced ventilation and heating, disease incidence was very high and chemicals only partially controlled grey mould. Moreover, yield was poor compared to that observed in the tunnel with controlled environmental conditions. Trichoderma, used as not formulated spore suspension, did not control grey mould.
