Concentration dynamics of organic matter and inorganic nutrients in natural grassland with prolonged application of graded nitrogen dosages

Results of a 9-year research project related to the quality of permanent grassland at the Suchy vrch station at Banska Bystrica (SR), (680 m above sea level), are presented, evaluating the effect of graded (0 - 300 kg.ha-1) N rates. Chemical analyses of several grass biomass samples resulted in following conclusions: Increasing N rates changed concentrations of nutrients but not in explicitly increasing or decreasing trends. Forage cut 3 times per year shows in average only slight increase in the N concentration or in nitrogenous compounds, as well as a prevailingly increasing content of Na and Mn; the contents of Ca and Zn decrease. In yields in the 2nd and 3rd cuts of meadow type utilization of natural grassland, the average concentrations of specific elements were found at higher levels compared to those in the first cut which represents the traditional "principal" cut over the vegetation period. For this reason, in spite of several problematic issues occuring in our contemporary agriculture, mainly in piedmont and mountainous regions of central Slovakia, the yields of the 2nd and 3rd cuts offering excellent volume fodder for farm animals, should be utilized to a substantially higher degree than in the past.
