The early development of teliospore formation - a possible component of the genetic control of cereal rusts

Early development of teliospores (EDT-phenomenon) seems to be a function of the cereal rust genotype and of the host plant genotype. EDT was expressed earlier with host plants showing the resistant, hypersensitive reaction but it also occurred in susceptible cultivars. The degree of EDT appears to be heritable in host plants and, therefore, it might be used in genetic control. The extent of EDT may be a result of the pathogen host x plant interaction and also of external factors. Higher temperatures support the EDT expression. The genetic control of cereal rusts using the EDT could be effective in both recognised resistant and susceptible cultivars. EDT detection tests can be done in both seedling and adult plant stages. However, more research is needed into the genetic and biochemical nature of the phenomenon and the effect of other external factors on the EDT.
