Excitation energy transfer from carotenoids to bacteriochlorophyll and thermal deactivation of absorbed energy in Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides

The polarized absorption and photoacoustic spectra of the cyanobacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides and its chromatophores embedded in polyvinyl alcohol films were measured and analyzed on Gaussian components. The part of absorbed energy converted into heat in carotenoids (Car) and bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) was calculated. The mean yield of excitation energy transferred from Car to BChl and not exchanged into heat was 76 %, but it differed for various BChl complexes.
