In the region of the Ondava Highlands in Eastern Slovakia the hydrological processes in a basin where fertilizers are applied to the soil were observed. NO3 concentration in surface water was used as an indicator, since NO3 is the most frequent component of industrial fertilizers. The results of chemical analysis in the stream together with statistical processing of obtained data in the given conditions of high variability of soil climatic factors, high declination of the terrain and extensive erosion, confirmed the transport of ions of applied fertilizers by precipitation water into surface water stream. Considering the fact that the final profile of the observed water stream is the drinking water reservoir Domasa, there is a justifiable assumption of the transport of other undesired substances applied in agricultural production, so that more attention should be given to prevention of water pollution in the area.
