Estimation of genetic progress for each generation of selection in crosses of wheat (T. aestivum L. Thell.)

Honeycomb selection in the absence of competition was carried out to isolate superior genotypes. In the case of controlled mass selection the genetic response was estimated in F3 to F6 generations of the cross Siete Cerros x Cyprus and in F4, F5 of Siete Cerros x Cyprus was also estimated. A comparison of the two methods of selection for the corresponding generation was made. The possible influences of selection in the absence of competition which were present in the parents were also investigated. The mean annual progress in the cross Siete Cerros x Cyprus, when controlled mass selection we applied for four generations of selection was 10,4 %. The respective progress of Yecora x Cyprus for two generations of selection was 11,4%. The mean annual progress in F4 and F5 was 5,5 %, in the case of pedigree selection. For the first time the variety Mykonos 3 has been created by controlled mass selection, which exhibited inbred vigor 10% in relation to Siete Cerros but when it was compared with cultivars of Greece, it was superior in yield by 4-30%. the variety Mykonos 1, created both by controlled mass selection until the F4 generation and by a pedigree selection (F4 and F5), exhibited inbred vigor 49% in relation to the best parent (Siete Cerros). It's yield was superior by 2-83% to certain cultivars and had better quality characters. Selection in the absence of competition securred good performance in high plant population density (isocompetition) but it contributed in the loss of genes responsible for allocompetition.
