Natural variation of wood moisture content in Black Pine

One hundred and twenty mature black pine trees were cut, thirty in each natural stand of the forests of Taygetos, Parnassos, Kalambaka and Thasos. From each tree five cross sectional disks were taken, at breast height the first and in equal distances S=(H-2):5 along the stem the others (H=total tree height) in which the wood moisture content was determined. From the analysis of the data, the variation in moisture content along the stem was determined and differences among trees and provenances were detected. The relationship of breast height and total tree moisture content was found very strong, making it possible the estimation of the whole tree moisture content from breast height values.
