Studies on the connection between surface temperature and water supply in maize stands.

The temperature of the maize stand was measured from a glider using an infra-red detector in order to determine the connection between temperature and the o/o water content of the plants. The measurments were always carried out at noon, and the stand temperature of sampling sites was calculated from data recorded when flying over the stand 3 or 4 times. Plant and soil samples were taken simulateously with the temperature measurements. The results showed that the temperature of the stands was most closely correlated to the o/o water content of the leaf blades below the ear, exhibiting a negative linear correlation. There was a significant correlation between stand temperature and the o/o water content of the whole plant. The smallest correlation was found between the temperature of the plant stand and the o/o water content of the maize stalks. There was a close correlation between the water content of the upper 0-60 cm soil layer and the o/o water content of the upper leaves.
