Rhythm of nectar secretion in the flowers of the Pandy sour cherry-48 clone.

The nectar production, the number of dehisced anthers and the time of stigma secretion were measured for 3 days, from the opening of the flowers till the end of flowering, in 23 marked flowers of the Pandy sour cherry-48 clone. In the homogamous flowers the maximum values of nectar secretion were observed every 6 h, at 6 a.m., noon, 6 p.m. and midnight. This was co-ordinated with the ability of the sporophylls to function. Flowers opening on the 1st day produced twice as much nectar as those opening on the 3rd day. If the weather warms up to above 22 deg. C, the maximum values of nectar secretion may occur an hour earlier. The clone examined produces twice as much nectar in the night and twilight hours as during the day, which is unfavourable from the point of bee pollination. This, together with the fact that stigma secretion takes place in the warm midday hours, is indicative of the need for night pollination in this clone.
