Comparative studies on the aphid transfer of maize-pathogen potyviruses

In a laboratory experiment, comparisons were made onthe aphid transfer of maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV-A) and of 2 strains of sugar cane mosaic virus (SCMV-MB and SCMV-A). For all 3 virus strains the best vectors were Myzus persicae, Rhopalosiphum maidis and Rh. padi while Schizaphis graminum spreads the diseases to a lesser extent. The transfer ability of Acyrtosiphon pisum varies, being more favourable in the case of the SCMV strains. This species does not live on maize, but may spread the virus while probing the plant, Metopolophium dirhodum, Aphis fabae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae only spread one strain each and only to a slight extent. The most important vector is Rhopalosiphum padi, which appears in large numbers in spring and early summer. Rh. maidis is only found in late summer and not in such large numbers, so it is less important for virus transfer. The virus vector role of Myzus persicae is also negligible, since it does not live on maize. The most important overwintering host plant of potyviruses is Sorghum halepense, though both MDMV and SCMV have also been isolated from Phragmites communis and Dactylis glomerata.
