Certain climatic parameters and trends in the sugar contents of musts in Szigetcsep (Central Hungary) and Gyongyos (Northern Hungary) in the years 1961-1990

The sugar content in the musts of the grape varieties Leanyka, Welschriesling and Blaufrankisch were studied from 1961-1990 as a function of certain climatic parameters of importance in vine production (beginning and end of vegetation period as determined by biological zero degrees, duration of vegetation period, effective heat sum during the vegetation period, sunshine duration between April and October). The smallest deviation (2.24 o/o) was found for the biological zero point in autumn, and the greatest for the precipitation (26.89 o/o). The must sugar contents were evaluated in vineyards cultivated using the head training method (1961-1970) and later the high cordon system (1971-1990). In both vineyards the must was of satisfactory quality even in poor years if harvesting time was sufficiently delayed. The drop in quality experienced in Hungarian vine production in recent years can be attributed chiefly to early harvesting of late-maturing varieties.
