Mathematical methods for the analysis of the chemical composition of pea stalks and leaves

The stalk and leaf mass remaining after pea harvesting was analyzed to determine chemical composition. The data were evaluated using factor analysis and regression analysis. The components of the correlation matrix indicate that as the ash content rises there is an increase in dry matter content and in Mg, Fe and Mn contents, but a decrease in crude protein, crude fibre and crude fat quantities. The Fe and Mn content exhibited a close positive correlation with each other, an increase in either of these variables led to a rise in dry matter and Mg content, but to a drop in crude protein, crude fibre and crude fat.
