Indonesia is facing problems of destruction of natural resources such as soil erosion, forest degradation, etc. To solve the problems, the Directorate General of Reforestation and Land Rehabilitation launched six (6) main projects: i.e. Reforestation Regreening, Soil Conservation, Shifting Cultivation Control, Social Forestry and Extension programmes. There are some problems to be faced in developing social forestry in Indonesia, i.e. low technical capability of the people, limitation of private land, low forest land capability, misconception of the people about the forest, forest distribution and the lack of capital. Agroforestry is practised in social forestry programmes, as tumpangsari/taungya system, sylvopasture, silvofishery and integrated dry land farming. To develop agroforestry in very densely populated areas such as Java, and in the context of shifting cultivation control in outer land, the government has established some Suistainable Natural Resources and Settled Farming Demonstration Plots as extension tools. These demonstrations plots have succeeded in introducing integrated dry land farming to the farmer and in supporting shifting cultivation control.
