Development of insect pest populations in certain rice godowns in Java, and a hypothetical appraisal on some ecological influences

Within the framework of cooperation between the National Logistics Agency (BULOG) and the National Atomic Energy Agency (BATAN), sixteen rice godowns of the Depots of Logistics (DOLOG) at East Java, West Java and Jakarta have been surveyed. From each godown forty samples, of half kilogram each of rice were randomly drawn from one or two chosen ricestacks stored one or two months earlier, in the depot. Three consecutive observations with a two month interval revealed the presence of Sitophilus oryzae (=S), Tribolium confusum (=T), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (=0), Rhizopertha dominica (=R), Carpophilus sp., Ephesta/Corcyra sp., Tenebroides mauritanicus (=Tn), and Cryptolestes sp.(=C) in godowns in East Java which contained domestic rice (from USA and Burma) located in West Java and Jakarta. The increase in numbers of the various insect species was calculated and the degree of correlation among them was determined. There showed the existence of strong correlation between S and T, T and O, S and O and T and C, and moderate correlation between S and C. Rhizopertha, being also a primary feeder, seemed to have only a minor influence on the growth rate of the insect of the various species and the production of rice powder indicated that there existed a strong correlation between the number of S, T, and O, alone or in combination, and the amount of rice powder produced. Besides the factor of interaction among the insect species which results in rice powder production, and loss weight of rice, some of the non-biotic environmental factors are also discussed.
