Effect of liming and its residue on crop performance, nutrient uptake and yield of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) on clay podzolic soil

Two experiments were conducted at Sitiung Experimental Farm and Sitiung IV, West Sumatra. Experiment one was carried out during dry season 1982, with two rates of liming : 0 and 2 t/ha. The peanut variety used was Gajah. Experiment two consisted of 3 consecutive croppings. First crop was peanut in dry season 1986 with 2 t/ha of lime. The second crop was upland rice in wet season 1986/87, without liming. The third crop was peanut again in dry season 1987 without liming. Four varieties of peanut were used in the first and the third crop namely : Gajah, Tapir, Pelanduk and Moket. Liming on the first planting increased exchangeable Ca from 0.6 to 10.4 me/100 g soil and improved other soil chemical properties. At the third planting exchangeable Ca decreased to 1.8 me/100 g soil. Concomitantly the nutrient contents decreased and the absorption of N and P decreased about 50 percent and K about 40 percent. The seed quality (weight of 100 seeds) and the yield of peanut in experimental one increased 10 and 53 percent respectively due to 2 t/ha of lime application. However, from experiment two, after one year application of 2 t/ha of lime on B2 climate type the effects dissappeared.
